Bantry Flood Relief Scheme

Introduction

In parallel with the Bantry Mill Culvert Upgrade Project, Cork County Council is progressing the Bantry Flood Relief Scheme (FRS), a separate but complementary project aimed at reducing flood risk across Bantry town.

While the MCUP focuses specifically on upgrading the culverted section of the Mill River within the town centre, the Flood Relief Scheme adopts a broader approach to flood risk management. It includes the assessment and development of flood defence measures such as walls, embankments and other interventions to protect properties and infrastructure from both fluvial and tidal flooding.

The two projects are being developed in close coordination, with both project teams working collaboratively and sharing information to ensure that the proposed measures are aligned and deliver an integrated approach to flood risk management in Bantry. This coordinated approach helps to maximise the overall effectiveness of both schemes while avoiding conflicts between proposed works.

Together, the MCUP and the Bantry Flood Relief Scheme form a comprehensive strategy to improve drainage performance, enhance flood protection and increase the long-term resilience of Bantry to climate change.
